The Batman – Jeffrey Wright may be Commissioner Gordon and Jonah Hill could be The Riddler

Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) is writing and directing The Batman, which will star Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman.

Warner Bros. is currently in talks with various actors to round out the cast. THR has the news that Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) is being considered for the role of Commissioner Gordon. In previous films and TV shows the character has been portrayed by Neil Hamilton, Pat Hingle, Gary Oldman, J.K. Simmons and Ben McKenzie.

This reaffirms that Warner Bros. is doing a soft reboot of their DC Universe and I imagine there will be little crossover with the various characters going forward. There is no word on what other supporting characters will be in the new film.

However, who would you like to see play Alfred, Lucius Fox, Barbara Gordon, and Detective Bullock?

The new film is said to focus on Batman’s experiences as the world’s greatest detective and feature a few of his Rogue’s Gallery. There is also this unofficial synopsis doing the rounds.

The Batman will explore a detective case — when people start dying in strange ways, Batman must go deep into the dark world of Gotham to find clues and solve the mystery/conspiracy connected to Gotham City’s history and criminals. In the film, all of Batman Rogues Gallery are already out there and active, similar to the comics and animated shows/movies. The film will have multiple villains, as they are all suspects.

According to Variety, Jonah Hill has been in talks to play one of the bad guys and both The Penguin and The Riddler are being mentioned for him. Rumour has it that talks have been going on for a while, but Hill’s agents have been asking for almost twice the amount of money as Robert Pattinson is getting for the film. Again, this is just a rumour.

As with all the Warner Bros. DC movies I just can’t get excited for them anymore. I am a big DC Comics fan, but I have been disappointed with most of the recent movies. Sure, there were some good moments in most of them, but they all seemed to lack something.

Pre-production on the Warner Bros. DC Comics movie is expected to start this summer.

I hope The Batman changes that, but we will just have to wait and see.

What are your thoughts on the potential casting news?
