The Weird and Wonderful Jim Carrey

For the last couple of decades, Jim Carrey has appeared on our screens as every whacky and whimsical character imaginable. His range of comedic characters have made a lasting impression on society; everyone has their favourite Jim Carrey character or quote. The ’90s and early ’00s saw the peak of Jim Carrey’s career, appearing in hit classics like The Truman Show, The Grinch and Bruce Almighty. But in recent years, he has been gracing our screens less and less after a self-imposed hiatus. With the recent news that he will return to our screens in the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog movie, we ask the question, how has Jim Carrey managed to stay relevant?

The Rise of Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey has spent over 40 years of his career practising comedy. He began as an aspiring stand-up comedian performing in clubs all across Toronto, Canada. But it wasn’t until the release of the 1994 hit film Ace Ventura Pet Detective when Carrey was propelled into the limelight. Since then, his films have grossed over $3 billion. He’s one of the most famous comedy actors in the world, and while he may not be to everyone’s taste, it’s undeniable that he has left his stamp on the film industry. The man now has a personal net worth of over $150 million, making him one of the richest actors in the world.

The next few years saw his career skyrocket. He delighted audiences with his performances in films such as The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. His wacky comedic acting style was new to the world of cinema, and it’s helped him succeed massively in the industry.  After his success in the 1998 film The Truman Show, Carrey won a Golden Globe for best actor. The next few years his success continued with films such as Me, Myself & Irene, Mr Popper’s Penguins and Kick-Ass 2 being huge hits.

A Change of Direction

After starring in Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, Jim Carrey took a back-seat from his acting career. Instead, he switched his focus to another art: painting. In 2017, Carrey released a short documentary titled I Needed Colour where he explains his new passion and some of his favourite pieces. He primarily uses his Twitter account to share his paintings with the world, and they often feature a powerful criticism of the current political climate in the US.

This has resulted in some backlash and criticism, but Carrey remains unfazed and continues to post his paintings on a regular basis.

Back into Acting

Kidding

Earlier this year, it was announced that Paramount would be making a live-action film of the hit video game Sonic the Hedgehog. Jim Carrey was announced to play Sonic’s arch nemesis, Dr Robotnik, who plans to take over the world. Carrey is no stranger to playing odd characters, so his portrayal of Dr Robotnik should be a return to the classic and cooky acting style of his we are used to.

He is also returning to TV with a new show called Kidding. Directed by Michel Gondry, who worked with Carrey on The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the show follows Jeff (Jim Carrey), aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television, a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – who also anchors a multimillion-dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through the crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.

Jim Carrey has taken some twists and turns in his Hollywood career, playing both comedic and serious characters brilliantly. He has endured tough times in his personal life, but he’s maintained a dignified and class act throughout it all. Even though many of his best-loved films took place in the ’90s, they have remained relevant to this day. The hit film The Mask still produces popular spin-offs, including an online slot game produced by NextGen Gaming, that fans of the movie still love playing. This video slot, unlike many others, doesn’t just revolve around the movie, but it also contains images of the main actors – Carrey, Cameron Diaz and the dog Milo – and even clips from the movie. And like for every other casino games, casual players don’t really need to deposit any money to try them, by using a welcome bonus from one of the many casinos available online.

The Grinch is also still popular, with a Stranger Things / The Grinch spin-off animation drawing attention last Christmas.

What’s Next?

With his return to acting, we must wonder, what’s next for Jim Carrey? It’s clear that his time in the limelight isn’t yet over, and he still has more to give. It appears that painting remains a true passion of his, and we can expect to see more in the future. He is currently filming for a TV series called Kidding, as well as preparing for his upcoming role as Dr Robotnik. Aside from those, who knows what’s next in the funnyman’s career. Whatever he does next, however, we know that he has remained relevant for so long and will continue to do so for many more years to come.
