Michael Bay may be directing DC’s Lobo movie

DC and Warner Bros. are trying to catch a bit of Deadpool magic and have once again turned their attention to making a Lobo movie. This one has been in development hell since 2009 when Guy Ritchie was originally attached to direct, but it seems they think Michael Bay is the one to now bring it to the big screen.

Is Bay the best choice for a film all about the Main Man? Probably not. Yet, all the Transformers movies still make a whole heap of money and that’s what DC and Warner Bros. will be looking at. I get the impression they are constantly trying to catch up with Marvel Studios, but want to just rush everything without taking the time to build good stories with these amazing characters.

Lobo is a Czarnian with exceptional strength and fortitude. He enjoys nothing better than mindless violence and intoxication, and killing is an end in itself; his name roughly translates as “he who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it.” He is arrogant and self-centred, focusing almost solely on his own pleasures, although he proudly lives up to the letter of his promises – but always no more or no less than what he promised. Lobo is the last of his kind, having committed complete genocide by killing all the other Czarnians for fun. As detailed in Lobo #0, Lobo unleashed a violent plague of flying scorpions upon his homeworld, killing most of its citizens – Wiki

To be fair, Lobo is all about the over the top violence, big explosions and slightly unsuitable and unsubtle humour so on that level Michael Bay is a perfect choice. I just think the Transformers have made many of us forget The Rock and Bad Boys.

According to The Wrap, Bay met with DC to discuss the project and gave some notes that Wonder Woman writer Jason Fuchs will incorporate into a rewrite. The studio plans to show the rewrite to Bay to see if they can make a deal, the insiders said.

Obviously, a lot also depends on the script and who they get to play Lobo, but as with all of DC’s movie decision of late, I just cannot get any excitement for these films featuring comic book characters that I love.

I had thought Dwayne Johnson would be a good choice to play Lobo, but he is still tied in to play Black Adam at some point in a DC and Warner Bros. movie.

Jason Fuchs had been working on the screenplay for the film, which thankfully seems to be sticking with the original Lobo and not the skinnier one that was introduced in DC’s New 52 event.

Original plans for a Lobo film had him arriving on Earth to capture a few fugitives. There is now word on whether this is still the planned storyline.

How do you feel about Michael Bay directing a Lobo movie? Who should play Lobo?
