NYCC Experiences – The Tick, Lore, Spider-Man: Homecoming and War for the Planet of the Apes

Amongst all the stores, artists and cosplayers at New York Comic Con, there were a number of film and TV experiences. I was there with Mike Spring, my co-host on the After the Ending Podcast. You can read all about my time in New York and the Comic-Con here.

First off, Mike got to experience motion capture special effects up close and personal, as he went through the War for the Planet of the Apes experience. Mike was lucky enough to get suited up by WETA Digital artist Jake Botting, who’s worked on movies like the Lord of the Rings & Hobbit trilogies, King Kong, and more. Jake explained how motion capture worked, and then Mike saddled up on a horse and got to watch as his motions were transformed onto the screen and the ape on screen mirrored his movements! It was a lot of fun and a cool look into how the apes are created in the Planet of the Apes films.

War for the Planet of the Apes is available in the US on home video now! It is released in the UK on 27th November 2017.

Amazon Prime Video had a big presence at this year’s New York Comic Con with two of their newest shows – The Tick and Lore – brought to life in the epicenter of sci-fi fandom in a completely immersive way.

Amazon Prime Video made its first foray into the hero universe with The Tick this past summer.

The Tick is a comedy with kinetic action, a wryly inventive visual style and crisply quotable dialogue. Heroes have flown among us for decades but mild-mannered accountant Arthur Everest (GRIFFIN NEWMAN) one day finds out there are also genuine bad guys in this new Amazon Original Series. He believes he has proof that The City, where he was born and raised, is actually controlled by a global super-villain known as the Terror (JACKIE EARLE HALEY). Destiny soon brings Arthur together with an eccentric, tall, blue-suited muscleman with a mysterious past and list of superpowers: The Tick (PETER SERAFINOWICZ). The title character serves as both the conscience and the unchecked id of the story. Citing the call of destiny, the Tick procures for Arthur a moth outfit with retractable wings and insists that he suit up as his sidekick. He and Arthur are the ultimate odd couple, but may just bring out the best in each other. In their quest to take back The City, the unlikely pair of heroes quickly sees just how complex the struggle between good and evil has become.

NYCC attendees were been given the chance to immerse themselves in a completely explorable, larger-than-life vessel built out on the convention’s main floor. Dangerboat, the opinionated sidekick and headquarters of The Tick’s Overkill, becomes a prominent meeting destination and character throughout the series storyline in both Season 1 and 2 of the popular original series. There were many hidden surprises within the experience, such as its ability to speak to the occupants themselves, customized promotional items that were unlocked using their RFID wristbands, lighting effects, emergency alarms, and more.

It was extremely well put together and it was like we had stepped onto the set of the show. There were so many buttons and switches and monitors that my inner child did not know where to begin!

Mike and I also got a complimentary can of Fo-Ham that held a couple of cool badges.

NYCC attendees and horror buffs seeking the ultimate Instagram photo were also thrilled by Amazon Prime Video’s Museum of Lore. In promotion of the new anthology series Lore, this unsettling, picture-perfect experience was inspired by one of the fastest-growing podcasts in the United States, Amazon Prime Video’s Lore activation is uncovering some of the most haunting myths of all-time in the most “shareable” way. Guests are taken through three rooms – “Gene’s Bedroom,” “The Unveiled,” and “The Beast Inside,” each of which will tell a different, blood curdling tale from Lore all while providing attendees with must-share photo opportunities.

Sometimes the scariest stories are true. Lore is based on the global, award-winning podcast sensation from creator Aaron Mahnke, and executive produced by Ben Silverman (The Office), Howard T. Owens (The Biggest Loser), Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead), Brett-Patrick Jenkins (Face Off), Glen Morgan (X-Files), Jon Halperin and Mark Mannucci (A Year in Space). Lore brings the podcast to life and tells the real-life origin stories that have led to our modern day myths and legends, including vampires, changelings, werewolves, séances and possessed dolls.

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to hang like Spider-Man? Sony Pictures Home Entertainment gave everyone the chance in the “Hang Like Spidey” Experience to celebrate the home entertainment release of Spider-Man: Homecoming!

It was very cool as they had recreated Peter Parker’s bedroom from the movie, but it was upside down. You entered through the window and it looked like you were crawling on the ceiling. The illusion was broken for me, when my water bottle fell out of my bag and fell onto the ceiling! However, you can see Mike about to enter the room below.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is available in the US on home video now! It is available in the UK on 20th November 2017.
