George A. Romero is bringing us Road of the Dead

It looks like George A. Romero has not given up on the zombie genre as he will be bringing us Road of the Dead.

The full title is George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead. The project was written by Romero and Matt Birman, who is attached to direct. This will be the next zombie film following Survival of the Dead, Diary of the Dead and Land of the Dead. Birman served as second unit director on all three movies.

According to IndieWire, the new film came from an original pitch from Birman roughly 10 years ago.

The story is set on an island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum for the entertainment of wealthy humans.

Birman describes the project as “Road Warrior” meets “Rollerball” at a Nascar race, with significant inspiration from “Ben-Hur.”

George A. Romero (New Romero Productions), Matt Manjourides, Justin Martell (Not the Funeral Home) Matt Birman (Pig Dreams) are producing. The film will be one of the projects participating in Frontières, the Fantasia International Film Festival’s annual film co-production market, has announced its first wave of projects for the ninth edition, which takes place from July 20 to July 23 in Montreal.

While the last couple of Romero zombie films have not been that good, I am always up for more from him. This one sounds rather crazy, but could have some cool visuals and is a fresh take on what has gone before. Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t. We will have to wait and see.

What are your thoughts on Road of the Dead?
