A Day in the Life of TIFF – Day 10: The Edge of Seventeen
Another year and another TIFF draws to a close. There is only one thing left, and that is the announcement of the awards, namely the People’s Choice at the ceremony on Sunday. However, the closing gala still needed to occur, and is really the official close of the festival. There are no more new movies after Saturday evening. No more red carpets for fans to cluster around in hopes of autographs, selfies or that one great shot (I’m included in many of those clusters!).
This year the choice was The Edge of Seventeen. Starring Woody Harrelson (also here with LBJ, which premiered Thursday evening) and Hailee Steinfeld this coming of age tale is the story of Nadine (Steinfeld) whose life goes into a bit of a tailspin when her best friend starts dating her annoying older brother (Blake Jenner – Glee, Everybody Wants Some). Ah to be young again! The film is helmed by Kelly Fremon Craig (one of a good crop of female directors here at the festival!), who makes her directorial debut. This will definitely be a good test for Steinfeld to see if she can really headline a feature, with most of her previous roles all being supporting. It’s getting pretty positive reviews, and we should expect a wider release this fall.
The red carpet welcomed back Woody Harrelson as well as star Hailee Steinfeld. Blake Jenner showed up with wife, Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist. Not bad for the last festival carpet!
