A Day in the Life of TIFF – Day 5: La La Land, Arrival

ryan-gosling

Three hours before La La Land was even set to premiere, there was a line up down the block along the barricades to get a glimpse of Emma Stone and home town favourite Ryan Gosling (okay technically he’s from London, Ontario but that’s only a few hours from Toronto).  The crowd was chanting his name before the door to his car even opened.  While he didn’t spend ages taking pics with the crowd he did better than the rest of the cast, Emma Stone only taking a minute or two before heading to the photo call and J.K Simmons and John Legend barely acknowledged the throngs of fans before heading into the Princess of Wales theatre.

On the flip side of the coin, Amy Adams spent a great deal of time for her second consecutive night on the carpet taking pics with appreciative fans.  Last night she was beautiful in white for the premiere of Nocturnal Animals and Monday night she completed the Canadian flag colours by dressing in red for the showing of her sci-fi film, Arrival (read my review).  Jeremy Renner was also on hand to support the movie, which will be a potential Oscar hopeful for Adams who has been nominated five times, but never won.

Audiences of the encore showing of Their Finest, the newest film from Danish director Lone Scherfig (An Education) got a special treat when the cast showed up for the screening including Sam Claflin, Gemma Arterton, and Bill Nighy.  It’s not terribly common for the whole cast to be present for a second screen – but they seemed happy to support the film, which is a beautiful love story to cinema (review coming soon).  Bill Nighy even took to the stage to say a few (quite humorous) words before the movie, detailing the problems of getting his Marmite into the country.  Hope you enjoy your toast and yeast extract Bill!
