Michael Cimino has passed away

Michael-Cimino

Ah, I had just finished the post about Robin Hardy passing away and then I saw the sad news that Michael Cimino has also died. He was 77.

He was best known for directing, producing and co-writing the 1978 Academy Award-winning film The Deer Hunter and for writing and directing 1980’s financial and initial critical failure Heaven’s Gate. However, the latter has become more well received in recent years.

Cimino directed eight films in his career. His first film was 1974’s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot; his second was the 1978 Vietnam War masterpiece The Deer Hunter; his third was 1980’s Heaven’s Gate.

He was the co-writer of Silent Running, starring Bruce Dern, and the 1973 Magnum Force, the second Dirty Harry film.
