Dark Army – Paul Feig is working on a Monster Movie for Universal
Universal’s Dark Universe is pretty much dead in the water. They had Dracula Untold and then Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, but nothing really took for the shared universe concept. I suppose making them scary may have been the way to go.
There is a new version of The Invisible Man in the works, but that is sounding more like a reboot of Hollow Man. It is from Blumhouse and Leigh Whannell so I have some hope for it.
Deadline have word on a new film called Dark Army. That makes me think of some kind of army composed of the various movie monsters fighting a bigger evil. I’ve no idea if that is what it will be about, but turns out it is a story that will be written and directed by Paul Feig….
In case you didn’t know, Feig is behind the recent Ghostbusters film (that wasn’t bad because of a female cast, it was bad because it was basically all improv and just a mess). He also directed Bridesmaids, Spy, The Heat, and A Simple Favor.
According to Deadline, no one was willing to be specific on how Feig’s film will tie into the Monster universe. It is thought that it will include characters from Universal’s classic monster library and original characters created by Feig.
That is all we really know about the film. If it is an Army of monsters fighting something…more monsterish, then it has potential. It is just there is nothing in Feig’s wheelhouse that makes me think he can deliver a really cool, scary monster movie. I may be wrong, I hope I am wrong.
As long as he does not cast a load of comedians and just have them improving around why vampires have pointy teeth he will be heading in the right direction.
What are your thoughts on the Dark Army?
Feig and Laura Fischer will produce through his Universal-based Feigco Productions.
