Neill Blomkamp is no longer directing the Robocop sequel
Back in July 2018 came news that Neill Blomkamp (District 9) would be directing a new RoboCop film, RoboCop Returns. Even better was the news that, like the recent Halloween movie, it would be a direct sequel to the original 1987 Paul Verhoeven film.
Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and exec producing, respectively. Their original sequel script and rewrite will be incorporated into the new film.
However, it looks like Blomkamp is no longer involved as he shared the following message on Twitter.
Off Robocop. I am shooting new horror/thriller and MGM can’t wait/ need to shoot Robocop now. Excited to watch it in theaters with other fans. N

It is a shame Blomkamp won’t be directing as, at the very least, it would have looked incredible.
Neumeier did talk about the plans they had for the film a while back.
I hope things get sorted and we do get to see the original Robocop back on the big screen in some form, but we will now have to wait and see.
