Tips for Making Your Own Home Video Using a Smartphone

Making a home video can be a fun activity and it’s a great way of unleashing your creativity. It’s also a lot easier to make home videos these days as you can simply use your smartphone. Most smartphones now record in HD or 4K so you can get excellent image quality.

Of course, there is still a place for old home movies in most homes. You can even look at transferring 8mm to DVD to make the movies easier to watch. However, it may also be time to record some new memories, taking advantage of how easy making a home video now is. Here are some tips to help you out along the way.

Use the back camera of your phone

Most people will automatically do this as a matter of course. After all, the main reason to use the front camera is to take selfies. However, it’s still worth mentioning that you should always use the back camera (main camera) of your phone when shooting video content.

Make sure that the video is stable

There is no point spending time recording a video only to find that the content is shaky when you come to watch it. This is why it’s so important to make sure that you pay attention to stability when filming a video.

It’s a good idea to place your phone on a tripod or a stable surface if you can. If this is not possible, you should make sure that you hold your phone with both hands while you are shooting the video.

Choose landscape mode

If you are shooting video content which is going to be viewed on a TV or computer screen, you should choose landscape mode. This is because portrait videos may be fine to view using a mobile device but they are not as impressive when being viewed on a larger screen.

Pay attention to lighting

If you take a lot of pictures using your phone you may be used to simply being able to adjust the light after the image has already been captured. However, it’s not as easy to do this when video content is involved.

This is why it’s so important to make sure that you have the right light conditions when you were shooting a video. It’s better to ensure that you use sufficient lighting than it is to use the flash on your phone.

Manage movement carefully

Videos that are made using a phone generally look better if the amount of movement is limited. Ideally, you should keep the phone still and concentrate on one area to video. If you do need to move at all, you should make sure that any movements are slow and carefully executed. Doing so means that the video will not look jerky and awkward.

Avoid zooming

Smartphones are not great when it comes to zooming. This is why you should always try and get close to a subject when you want to video it in close detail. Remember that when you are approaching the subject you should do so slowly and carefully so that the video does not look jerky.

These tips should help you create great home videos using your smartphone.
