It looks like Tony Todd will be in the new Candyman movie

Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures (MGM) has partnered with Monkeypaw Productions’ Jordan Peele & Win Rosenfeld to produce a new Candyman film.

The 1992 horror classic was adapted from Clive Barker’s short story The Forbidden and starred Tony Todd as the titular character. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) will direct the new film from a screenplay by Peele and Rosenfeld. The film, a “spiritual sequel” to the original, returns to the neighbourhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.

The film had already cast Lakeith Stanfield, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris.

It was not clear whether Tony Todd would be returning to the film in some capacity as he had previously said that nobody had contacted him about the new film. However, speaking at Nickel City Con in New York, Todd had this to say.

Out of the blue I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.

It does not tell us what role Todd will be playing, but I would love to have him at least voice Candyman, but we will have to wait and see. I hope it is not just a glorified cameo. I am just glad to hear that he has finally been approached to appear in the film.

What would you like to see in a new Candyman movie?

Production is expected to begin in Spring 2019. Universal Pictures will release Candyman theatrically in the U.S. on June 12, 2020.
