Jeff Nichols says that the Alien Nation remake will be “Epic!”
The Alien Nation remake has been development for a few years now. Back in 2016 Jeff Nichols (Loving, Mud, Midnight Special) was attached to direct.
The original 1988 film followed the assimilation of the Newcomers, an alien race settling in Los Angeles, much to the dismay of the local population. The plot integrates the buddy cop film genre with a science fiction theme, centering on a union between a veteran police detective Matthew Sykes and Sam “George” Francisco, the first Newcomer detective. Sykes and Francisco probe the criminal underworld of the Newcomers as they attempt to solve a homicide.
There was also a TV show that followed on from the film.
The 2017 David Ayer directed Bright also dealt with similar themes and setting.
Nichols recently spoke to /Film about the new version.
It’s epic. I mean, it’s the biggest canvas I’ve ever painted on, but it 100 percent feels like a Jeff Nichols film, which I’m sure there are gonna be some Alien Nation fans out there that are like, “What the fuck?” But my hope is if they … If people come to it just ready for a new story, that they’ll like it. And I put my heart and soul into it. To be the project that’s supposed to be me being a sell out, it is like the least … I’m not saying that to save face or be cool. I put so much of myself into it, it takes place in Arkansas. There’s so much of me in it.
I am definitely up for a new version of Alien Nation. Enough time has passed and the basic set up of it is still, sadly, very relevant. There is no word on a cast for the film, but Nichols has worked with Michael Shannon and Matthew McConaughey in previous films.
However, now that Disney has bought 20th Century Fox there is a chance that things could change.
