Cary Fukunaga will direct Bond 25

After Danny Boyle left Bond 25 there were many names mentioned to possibly take over the director’s chair.

Turns out none of them got the gig, but I am very happy to say that Cary Joji Fukunaga is now going to direct the next James Bond film. The 41-year-old American director hit the spotlight with 2009’s Sin Nombre . He also directed Jane Eyre and Beasts of No Nation, but many of you will know him from the first season of True Detective which was truly excellent. Most recently, Fukunaga directed Netflix’s dark comedy Maniac.

Producers Barbara Brocoli and Michael G Wilson confirmed Fukunaga’s appointment in a statement.

“We are delighted to be working with Cary,” they said. “His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure.”

However, because of all the behind the scenes shenanigans, the release date has been pushed to 14th February 2020.

According to reports, Boyle clashed with producer Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig over the “ridiculous” idea of killing James Bond. The producers also didn’t like the most recent script as it was dealing with recent political tensions with Russia.

“There were discussions about killing off Bond in dramatic fashion at the end,” an insider told The Sun. “It would also leave it open for a twist in the next instalment — either Bond hadn’t died or there could be a Doctor Who-esque regeneration with a new actor.”

I imagine the script will go through some rewrites so who knows what we will be getting. As I was really disappointed in the last couple of Bond films I am not really bothered what happens next, but Fukunaga being involved has lit a spark in me. We shall just have to wait and see whether he goes the distance because it seems they are trying to shake things up with James Bond for no particular reason.

Fukunaga was originally going to direct the recent adaptation of Stephen King’s It, but ended up leaving the project so we shall have to wait until filming actually begins to see if this does end up happening.

Everyone knows a different actor will play the character at some point as that’s what has always happened.

Just cut out all the rubbish that has all the events and bad guys linked to Bond for stupid reasons. Have him go up against a villain who just either wants to take over the world or steal an insane amount of money and has no ties to Bond in the slightest.

Plus, instead of recasting Bond with an actor of a different race or sex, why not just have new OO characters with their own adventures and build more iconic characters. There are many more numbers than 007 so use that. Build a James Bond cinematic universe if you want. Call it the 00-verse! Just make sure you get good scripts full of excitement, action and the occasional quip.

What would you like to see in Bond 25?
