Toy Review: Marvel Legends Series Infinity Gauntlet
Avengers: Infinity War has blasted into cinemas and it is truly incredible (check out our spoiler-free review). Lots of cool action and great character moments that combine to tell a brilliant story. We also spend a lot of time with Thanos, the Mad Titan as he seeks the Infinity Gems to complete the Infinity Gauntlet.
Obviously, that is quite a big deal, so I was quite surprised when said Gauntlet arrived on my doorstep. Turns out old Thanos wanted me to work out the kinks in it before he headed off to do…something…he was quite vague on what he had planned, but I am sure it will be okay!
Needless to say, I quickly put it on and was welcomed with a lovely glow from all the Infinity Gems along with a glorious, ominous sound as it powered up. I clicked my fingers and everything went a bit weird. I brought everything back to normal and made myself a simple copy of the Gauntlet to play with.* I told Thanos to stop sending me items of infinite power and I think he finally got the message.
Okay, so what I ended up with was the Legends Series Infinity Gauntlet (check out my review of the Legends Series Mjolnir) and this is the official description.
Bring one of the most powerful weapons in the Marvel Universe to life! With this premium Infinity Gauntlet Articulated Electronic Fist from the Marvel Legends Series, lift up the power of the Infinity Stones and imagine taking control of the galaxy with the notorious gauntlet worn by the supreme being, Thanos.
Harness the power of the universe with this 1:1 full-scale INFINITY GAUNTLET! Measuring 19.5 inches long, this collectible role play gauntlet features premium sculpting and articulated fingers that can be clenched into a fist. Includes electronic light and sound effects that illuminate all six Infinity Stones when the gauntlet is activated.
Inspired by the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie, this Infinity Gauntlet from the Marvel Legends Series features premium design and styling, as well as intricate detailing on the gauntlet and 6 light-up Infinity Stones. Features pulsating light effects, movie-inspired sounds, and individually articulated finger movement, as well as a fist-lock feature for display.
The first thing you notice is that it is big (they say 1:1 scale, but I don’t think that is quite true. However, as it can alter reality I will let that go!). 19.5 in./49.6 cm from fingertip to wrist so you really get the sense of unlimited power as your meagre, skinny arm puts it on. Inside is a bar you hold and you put your fingers through some plastic rings. When you pull them the fingers of the Gauntlet move. The articulation works well and you can tap your fingers, make a fist, rude gestures, and so on. That is all accompanied by an excellent sound effect of metal clanking together. You cannot really pick much up with it due to the sheer size. I tried lifting Mjolnir, but couldn’t get a decent grip. Either I was not worthy or the fingers wouldn’t close enough.
There is a locking mechanism (located just below the Soul Gem) that means you can have the Gauntlet in a specific pose when you put it on display.
It is made of a thick rigid plastic and does look very good. Obviously, it is not as realistically details or painted as the Hot Toys version, but that is all part of what you pay.
The Infinity Gems light up in a most pleasing fashion and when you first move the fingers there is a sci-fi type hum and clanking sounds that, having seen the film, are excellent.
All in all, I was extremely impressed with the Gauntlet. It is very well made, very faithful to the source (not a DC comic book reference) and looks so cool.
However, Hasbro very kindly sent me it to review so it has not cost me anything. It is going for $99 on the Hasbro site and it is selling at other places for more. Therefore, it could be rather expensive for many people. I certainly couldn’t justify spending that amount on it. However, being a long time comic book fan and having read the original Infinity Gauntlet comics and other tales of Thanos it is definitely something I would long for. Even then I am not sure how I would feel if I had spent that money and then got a great big piece of plastic that lit up and made noises. If I had the space to put it on permanent display that would be something, but I don’t.
That’s the dilemma. If you love the Marvel movies, comic books and you have the funds to buy it without having to worry about bills and expenses then I say go for it. If you don’t have the money to burn then I would advise you seriously consider it first and try and get a look at one to make your mind up.
But it is the Infinity Gauntlet and it is so damn cool!
*Please not the Marvel Legends Series Infinity Gauntlet does not contain the actual Infinity Gems and has no Universe Shattering powers within. It is simply a replica!
