There is a slight chance Karl Urban could return for the Judge Dredd TV show

Last week there came word that a Judge Dredd TV show was being developed. IM Global and independent U.K. games developer and publisher Rebellion have struck a deal to make Judge Dredd: Mega City One, a high-end TV series based on the globally-famous character from the pages of legendary British comic book 2000 AD, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Set in a future where east coast America has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis, the show will be an ensemble drama about a team of Judges – futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner – as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd Century throws at them.

There was no word on the cast, but obviously many of us would like to see Karl Urban back on the streets of Mega City One as he was excellent in Dredd. It seemed doubtful, but there is a sliver of hope.

The latest 2000 AD Thrill-Cast talked to producer Brian Jenkins, and executive producers Jason Kingsley and Mark Stern about the show. Turns out they have had talks to Urban about the possibility of returning to play Dredd. This is what Jenkins had to say about it.

The great thing about Karl is he is actually a big fan of the comic book and he’s a really nice guy. I know him well enough to speak to him personally. We have had many conversations prior to this, about all sorts of things. He’s also very busy, a full-time professional actor. So we’re going to have some long and complicated conversations I would imagine, and we’ll see where we go.

It’s too early to tell yet, but if we can use him and he’s available to us, then I think that would be absolutely brilliant. There’s always a possibility he will be busy, or that his schedule for other movies won’t allow. Basically, we don’t know at this stage, but we want to work with the best people we can find for this massive project.

So it’s not much, but the fact Urban is still interested in the character is great to hear. Fingers crossed that the scheduling and everything else works out, but probably best not get too excited about it. I would also like to know whether Olivia Thirlby could return to play Anderson.

The show will be more of an ensemble show with a large cast, so Dredd would not be the focus all the time. Whatever happens I am very excited about a Mega City One show.

You can listen to them talking about Urban at 3:14 on the player below.
